Kerala, 'God's Own Country'

With her serene beaches, emerald backwaters, sprawling plantations and paddy fields, waterfalls, lush hill- stations, exotic wildlife, ayurveda, festivals and enchanting art forms, cultural and historical monuments, THIS is Kerala! With her equable climate, exotic cuisine, the Arabian Sea in the west, the Western Ghats in the east and a network of forty- four rivers, Kerala has become one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia.

Her capital city, Trivandrum and its famous beaches are one of the top tourist destinations for Tourists in India.;

     The city gets its name from the word, Thiruvananthapuram, which means 'the city of Anantha ' or the 'abode of the sacred Serpent Anantha' on which Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu trinity, reclines. This beautiful seaside city is built upon seven hills and is characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills with narrow winding lanes and busy commercial alleys.

     The Padmanabha Swamy Temple and the Fort surrounding it, the Napier Museum and the Zoo, the Victoria Jubilee Town (VJT) Hall, the Palayam Mosque and Church are among the prominent heritage buildings in the city. The Veli Lake and the Shangumukham beach are popular tourist spots too. Trivandrum appears to be a laid back quiet city to the casual observer. However, beneath it is a humdrum of cultural activity. The city comes to life especially during the festival season of Onam in August\September and more so during the tourist season.
